Pay It Forward & Smile: A Recap

I found this little gem of a post as I was searching through my old blog for photographs I wanted to keep. I know I have posted it before, but the message still rings true and I still believe that its one of the more important lessons that I need to remember. I would like to share the following with you.
Pay it Forward & Smile.

If you are happy and you know it clap your hands *clap clap* If you are happy and you know it clap your hands *clap clap* If you are happy and you know it and you really want to show it, if you are happy and you know it ... then show it!

I am a firm believer that a smile and the right attitude can save the world. People I know, people I don't know, the majority of those I have run into agree on one thing - I have a great smile. Even on my sick, crappy days I still smile. It is not the customers fault if I am sick or tired or unhappy and I don't believe in giving in to my emotions, especially at work. St Francis once said, 'preach the gospel at all times. Use(ing) words if necessary.' and I believe in that one hundred percent.

Ever since I was younger I put it on myself to smile at everyone. It was my job from God in a sense. I would put it on myself to smile at the gas attendant, a stranger walking down the street, a Seven Eleven employee. etc. I remember once I smiled at a Seven Eleven employee and he definitely did a double take to see if I was actually smiling at him. Then he smiled back. I hope I was a little sparkle in his day.

This is my job. To smile. It may seem simple and small, but actually most days its kind of hard. Especially when you get someone who is being rude. I just have to remember that I never know what kind of day they are having - the anger or rudeness is never actually meant for me. People have bad days. I know I do. When people are being rude I smile and 'kill them with kindness.' I find that it stops the majority of people in their tracks when they realize that my emotions will not change due to their actions or moods. I put up a good front and help them the best that I can. There have been times when afterwards I would have to excuse myself and run to the backroom of my job to cry a little, but I never give the customer the satisfaction of ruining my day. My tears are with God. I pray. I pray for the customer. A smile comes onto my face and I return to my job. Some people do not smile back, their moods do not change. But the majority of people I come across do end up smiling at some point in my encounter with them. And that is enough for me.

This is the point where I encourage you, dear reader! No matter where you are, how busy you are, how busy others are, how rude some people are. Smile. Because sometimes all someone really needs is a friendly face. Who knows whose life you might save by smiling a little - even it its just saving them from a crappy day at work.

'Most smiles are started by another smile.' Author Unknown.

'A smile costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometime lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.' - Author Unknown.

Get the idea? I do. I love reading these quotes when I am at my ropes end. Sometimes I get frustrated that my smiles don't make much a difference. But I have to believe that they do. Why else would God have given me a smile that people take the time to compliment me on? Just smile.

*This post was written for everyday life. However, since we are in the middle of Winter, it is now most important to bring out the smiles and 'pin them on' our faces. Many people get affected by the winter blues every year. It causes sadness, depression, anger, just to mention a few. You never know who you could change by smiling. So smile today. It could change someones day.
